As an active duty or retired military family there are some hidden perks when it comes to owning an RV – including access to U.S. military campgrounds at lower costs relative to what you may find in surrounding areas.

I am often surprised at the amount of people who aren’t aware of the campsites available to military families. They can often be found across the country and in several destination locations, or within reasonable driving proximity to them. For example, the photo shown above is located within Camp Pendleton at the Del Mar Beach and Marina. My husband and I were able to book an RV site – with full hookups, directly on the Del Mar beach and for relatively cheap!

The beach was located inside the base and had been private and secure. The campground was well kept, the beaches were pristine, and we were able to secure our RV in order to explore Oceanside and San Diego during our stay.

Talk about the ideal getaway! Imagine, opening your RV door and stepping directly onto the sand and watching beautiful sunsets each evening next to a campfire.

But the Del Mar Beach and Marina are only one of many U.S. military campgrounds where you might find this experience.

List of U.S. Military Campgrounds

As an active duty or retired military family, you have access to all campsites located on any U.S. Military base. A comprehensive list of U.S. military campgrounds can be found here.

This includes destination locations throughout Florida and along the east coast of the U.S. You even have the ability to plan your next RV getaway in the Florida Keys, or along the Gulf Coast. Where you will find incredible views and endless fun activities offered on that base.

However, there are locations available in nearly every state.

Other Perks

In addition to cutting costs by staying on campgrounds located on a U.S. base, you also have access to the MWR (Moral, Welfare, and Recreation).

This service offers military families usage of rental equipment such as kayaks, fishing gear, scuba gear, boats, etc. The program can include discounted prices to local parks, or events.

My husband and I have taken full advantage of the MWR services in the past and do not take this privilege for granted whenever we travel.

You can locate the MWR services at each military installation here.

Summary

Before you plan your next trip utilize the link provided above to locate the U.S. military campgrounds at your desired locations. Be sure that you reserve your RV campsite well in advance, as some destination areas may be fully booked up.

In order to cut additional costs, find the base’s MWR program and plan out your activities for your family vacation.

Enjoy your family RV getaway and the lighter cost to your wallet!
